I can only suggest that you ensure that the following environment
variables are defined:
SWORDPATH Points to where you installed SWORD
GRXFONT Path to the font files
GRX20DRV If set to VESA should be Ok.
The only problem I could see is if your video card is a very new one
with VESA 2.0 and no VGA registers (but I don't think it is :) )
I've tried contacting the SWORD author myself, no joy. Another
potentially good bit of software gathering rust.
