I would recommend both 'Tricks of the Game Programming Gurus' 
and 'More Tricks of the Game Programming Gurus.'  Both are 
excellent books with topics like writing your own keyboard handler,
using both VGA and SVGA video modes, and basically anything else
you might need to program a decent game.
