This is a semi-known bug: a couple of people have sent me examples which
demonstrate similar behaviour (eg. works when compiled as C but not as
C++, or optimisation flags break the program). I suspect I'm clobbering
some registers or leaking memory somewhere, but don't worry, I'm working
on it :-)
