Actually, the vast majority of the spam is probably posted on the
newsgroup and gatewayed to the mailing list. DJ has a script on the
gateway that catches a great deal of the spam and prevents its
propagation. Unfortunately, this occasionally catches things it
shouldn't, like a portion of one of my signature files. :)
The problem is that this protection can't be effectively applied
directly to the newsgroup unless it is officially declared as moderated
or retro-moderated. Doing so without permission from the Usenet Gods
would result in all sorts of horrid consequences. :)
