It should work with C++; the sound setup utility that comes with it is C++!
Are you sure you have the latest version? The latest full release is 2.2.
There is a version "WIP" (Work In Progress) for beta-testing new features
for 3.0, which are mostly buggy/not implemented yet. :-)

Also, be sure you #include <allegro.h> as you would in a C program, link
in -lalleg (in RHIDE put alleg in the library select box and check off the
check box nearby), and cast strings to unsigned char when using textout()
and textout_centre()
