please address basic C related questions to the appropriate groups. For
example, comp.lang.c or comp.lang.c.moderated. for an answer to your
question, see the comp.lang.c FAQ at

look at questions 11.12, 11.13, 11.14, 11.15 and 11.16.

personally, i would recommend you stay away from the 'dummies' and
'idiots' books unless you really are one.
