I don't know from where you take the fact, that a '.' is special in
node names, but in the texinfo docs (the one which have printed out
is "Edition 2.21 for Texinfo Version Three" "June 1995") there are
examples for node names (and menu entries) which contain a '.' like
the following:

@node Sect. 2.1, Sect. 2.2, Chapter 2, Chapter 2
