Let me guess... Are you an assembler programmer? Or do you code your programs
directly as a sequence of '0' and '1'? ;) Maybe you have asked DJ Delorie to
program your compiler for you!

I think that every programming language has its benefits and its lacks. And I
think that Allegro library is a good extension to reach a goal in a shorter
time. This is not only a company point of view (I like programming, I did it
for my work, but I'm not a professional programmer and I never had problems
with my coding times!), it is only to reach a goal and make your idea work.
Beyond the lesson one could learn in re-implementig stuff, I think that one
should use something useful. Or have you re-implemented your personal
getch(), cprintf() and calloc() ?
