Ok. Perhaps you (or somebody) should add something to the readme file
for emacs (the 19.34 version) that says "Do NOT build using bash as
the command prompt"?

Yes, it was, but the error message was exactly the same, so it seemed
like the same bug.
It seems the making of tar works (still).
