I have recently installed djgpp and the allegro library on my 486 dx4
100MHz. I am very happy that I now have the djgpp compiler on my dos
based pc, as have I been using it on a UNIX machine in my working
enviroment for quite some time. However, I am experiencing some difficulty
in getting the allegro sound routines to work. The midi routine seem to
work ok, but can't get the sample playing routines to work.
The allegro docs state that there is no reason you should not use
DIGI_AUTODETECT when calling install_sound(), well, I found one.
install_sound sees my sb16 on irq 7 while it is installed on irq 5.
The docs also state that irq 7 is the usual irq, but this is not my
experience. My experience is that on ibm-compatibles the soundblaster goes
to irq 5.
Any thoughts on the subject or tips. Is this a problem in the allegro
library or in my system. If it's a problem in my system, why don't I
experience it playing commercial games like doom?
Any input would be appreciated, but please don't flame me if there is an
obscure faq somewhere where I could have found it, the installation proces
has given me enough headaches as it is. (harddisk crashed the first time,
arj archive was corrupted the second time and my diskdrives died on my the
third time, luckely I had an old one lying around, so in the end it all
worked out, and my computer came out of the proces somewhat mutilated, but
I have grown more attached to it in the proces. I try to see it as a
learning experience *grin*).

Groeten,
Dries
