Which examples, exactly? There is only one that explicitly tries to
use VBE/AF: the others should only give you that error if you've set
VBE/AF in your config file, or are choosing it from the graphics mode
selection dialog.

Only if you've installed one: it is an external graphics driver that
Allegro will try to use if you have it.
