textout(bitmap,font(usually just "font" or
datfile[FONT].dat),string,x,y,color);

this doesn't mask though, which means you have to make your own sub to do
that, which is easy to do with a little ingenuity...

        clear(textbuffer);
        textout(textbuffer,font,str,0,0,col);
        masked_blit(textbuffer,screen,0,0,x,y,320,15);
}

That should do it, you can mess around with it from there
