You should use typedef. I always do it like this:

In you header file you write:

typedef struct __my_struct {
  int some_variable;
  char blabla[23];
} my_struct;

And then in your program you use:

#include "my_header_file"

my_struct my_struct_list[18];

This way you separate the definitions from the declarations.
