It would be useful if you mentioned what type of soundcard you have,
and which Allegro drivers you are using.

At a guess, Windows is using some kind of wavetable hardware, while
Allegro is using the Adlib FM synth. Try some different Allegro
drivers instead, for example the MPU or DIGMID (you need patches
for that: see the Allegro website for info about where to get them).
