Someone asked why make didn't work when trying to
compile gcc, the interface to all of DJGPP's functions.

If you're talking about the hen-and-egg problem,
shouldn't it be "hens it won't compile"? :-)
So how was gcc built? I wonder...
How was qDOS (aka MS-DOS 0.1) saved to disk?
How are Windows's CD-ROM drivers loaded from the CD?
How is PKZIP unzipped?
How is the FTP client downloaded?
How was the first living cell created?
