Thanks for the info.

I saw this in the manual, but the wording there implied that this is
only good for interactive work.

The manual also didn't tell whether Ctrl-X can quote *all* of the
special characters, not only `.  Can it?

And, of course, the question of questions: how do you quote Ctrl-X
itself?
